This year’s update to iPhoto is a substantial one. Apple has worked hard, improving current features, and also introducing some cool new features.

Upfront, the notable change you will see when launching iPhoto 6 is the interface. The interface now matches that of iTunes 6, which looks very smooth and attractive. It has a soft touch of blue in the sidebar where your albums reside, and the rest of the interface has a nice aqua edge too it.

Faster Loading
One of the heavily marketed features in the new iPhoto is the major speed enhancement. When you open iPhoto your photos now load considerably faster. Scrolling through your photo library is also a much speedier experience. iPhoto now has the ability to store and organize up to 250,000 images, so the speed incensement will be dearly loved by those with larger photo libraries.

Photocasting
Apple’s brand new feature to iPhoto, Photocasting has been talked about a lot among Mac fanatics. Photocasting allows .Mac members to share photos anywhere, anytime, all around the world.

When you click on an image, you can click the Photocast button, and it will publish the image to your .Mac account, along with automatically creating an RSS feed which others can subscribe to and view your images.

Once your Photocasting RSS feed is created, friends or family can subscribe to the feed directly through iPhoto, or if they use a Windows computer, the images can be viewed through any RSS reader.

Full Screen Editing
iPhoto 6 now allows you to take advantage of every pixel of your display, with its new feature called “Full Screen Editing”. Full Screen Editing allows you to edit your images in a full screen setting; you see your image in the centre of the screen, surrounded by black darkness. When you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen, editing options pop out from the bottom of the screen, allowing your to perfect your images to the last, tiny detail.

Full Screen Editing has great potential to be expanded and updated by Apple. Hopefully we will see a similar feature in future iLife upgrades to other applications, such as iTunes.

One Click Effects
One of my favourite iPhoto features is the exciting effects you can add to images. This year, Apple has made applying effects to images a whole lot easier, with the new feature, “One Click Effects”.

When viewing an image, simply click on the “Effects” button, and you are greeted with a small pop-up box, with 9 awesome effects you can apply to the image with the click of a button.

Greeting Cards
A feature inspired by iPhoto’s “Book Printing”, Greeting Cards are a welcome new addition to iPhoto 6. This new feature allows you to create a stylish Greeting Card to share with the family. To create one, simply pick one of the elegant Apple templates, drag your images into the template, and create your custom-greeting message. Once completed, hit the “Buy Card” button, and follow the prompts. This is another huge time saving feature.

Final Thoughts
iPhoto 6 is a major upgrade to the iPhoto application. All previous users of iPhoto should be eager to upgrade to the new version.

New features are plentiful, and the application now run’s noticeably faster. Anyone with a large photo library will want to upgrade for iPhoto’s stunning new speedy interface. Apple has added enough features to warrant an upgrade. In my eyes, and essential purchase for any iPhoto user.

<img align="right" alt="MoviePod for your iPod Video"src="http://www.macgears.com/wp-images/moviepod.jpg"/>Apple’s recently released iPod 5G is a huge step towards media domination in the technology industry. With the new iPod 5G’s ability to store and play up to 150 hours of high quality video on the small player, this is an exciting new innovation for Apple and music fans. The downside of the new iPod 5G, is that video needs to be in a specific format, and a specific screen size to play on the iPod. Otherwise the video capability is useless.

We recently reviewed another similar application to MoviePod, called Podner. MoviePod is Podner’s main competitor in the video converting market for Apple’s iPod’s. Let’s take a look, and see what MoviePod has to offer!

My first impressions of MoviePod; were a well-designed application, which has so much to offer. Not in the means of a total simplistic look, but MoviePod exhibited a sensational amount of options and tweaks; to make your movie the exact way you want it.

Like Podner, in the options menu, you get to choose video resolution, video quality, audio quality, and many more conversion methods. You have the option to add the movie/s to iTunes once converted, and also a few general application tweaks.

MoviePod supports every common movie format (MOV, MPG, AVI, ASF, WMV, VOB, DV and QuickTime plugins) so you can easily get your movie collection onto your iPod!

The options available are much more solidly built than Podner, and have more vital customization tweaks.
The standout feature of MoviePod in my opinion, is not the jaw-dropping set of features, nor the simplistic design, but its the ability to “queue’ movies. You can add more than one movie to the main application window at once. Then when the first movie is done converting, it will automatically move onto the next, as so forth.

Something else that stood out with a great force to me, was the ability to preview the newly converted movie, while it was still converting! Great for people that cant wait to see their videos in new crystal clear H.264 format.

MoviePod’s main competitor, Podner, wouldn’t run without Apple’s Tiger 10.4 operating system. MoviePod is one step ahead, and has programmed their application to run on Panther 10.3.9. This is very handy and pleasing for people with a video iPod, but don’t want to shell out the money on Tiger.

Yet, there is one noticeable downside to MoviePod. MoviePod does not display the time left in the converting process like Podner. Not a large feature to leave out, but it’s something that most will notice and dearly miss. This is something I would like to see added in the next version.

The user interface is very simple and easy to use. If you are on the lookout for a video converting application to partner up with your iPod 5G, have a look at Null Rivers MoviePod. Null River offers a free trial of the programme and you can upgrade it to the full version for $10.

We all have times when we need to get a screenshot of what is on the Mac’s screen. You may own a website and be writing reviews that you need in action images for, you might want to show something cool to a friend in another country, or you might have seen something unusual, and want to capture the moment to show off to friends.

FreeSnap is the ultimate screen taking application. It beats both SnapzProX and Apple’s included application “Grab”, by a considerable margin.

Why is FreeSnap so good? The application has a great, simple interface, and is full of options to capture a perfect picture.

Some of your screenshot options available include full screen, selection, open window, and fixed location. Now we move onto the exciting options – You can now choose a scale for the image, this helps when you need the image to fit onto a certain web page, or you just want to save space and time when uploading.

It even has a timer feature. Therefore, you can set the timer and get the window exactly set into position for the snapshot; Stunning!

You can even set up handy keyboard shortcuts to take screenshots. Perfect if you need to quickly capture an image, and do not want to open an application up.

Some of the output options include file type, filename, and save destination. You can save the image as the following image types; JPG, JPEG, PNG, PSD, TIFF, PDF, BMP, TGA, SGI, and even more! The list goes on. There is even a compression option to take the file size down. That can be handy when sending to relatives and friends on a dial up connection.

This application is so popular in my opinion for the simplistic interface, with powerful features. Definitely worth a look!

Statistics in 2004 for United States shows that more than 600,000 laptop thefts occurred, totaling an estimated $720 million in losses and an estimated $5.4 billion in theft of proprietary information. That’s the good news. The bad news is, 97% of the stolen laptops were never recovered.

I cannot imagine the pain that will hit me if my iBook or PowerBook was stolen. Now, with Orbicule’s software product called Undercover, I can at least have the assurance that my iBook stand a higher chance of being recovered if stolen.

Here’s how Undercover works:
In the unfortunate event of a theft, Undercover will reveal the Internet location of your Mac. It will also periodically transmit screenshots, enabling you to monitor the stolen Mac. It is hoped that the thief will use for email, chatting and browsing so that it is easier to reveal the thief’s identity.

In the unlikely event that the thief does not go unto the Internet, Undercover has what it calls Plan B.
In Plan B, Undercover will simulate a hardware failure (gradually making Mac’s screen unusable). Accompanying this “hardware failure” is a message that a hardware failure is detected. This will make the thief to either send the Mac in for a repair or sell it off on the Internet. Bringing the Mac out into the open will most likely trap the thief as both Apple and Orbiscule tracks stolen product’s serial number (provided you reported to them).

Some skeptics claimed that simply by formatting the hard-drive, the software would be removed and generally that is what thiefs do immediately after a theft. However, with Apple’s Firmware Password installed, thiefs have no access to your iBook or PowerBook without the password.

Orbicule’s Undercover is available for $29.99. For more information, visit Orbicule.

Besides listening to the iPod all the time, you can use your iPod to records stuffs as well. A friend of mine had a conversation about recording over the iPod and he was very adamant (or should I say stubborn) that the iPod is built for listening and not for recording. Talk about love for an iPod.

There are 2 ways that you can get started recording. Firstly (the easiest way), get yourself a Griffin iTalk, iPod Voice Recorder ($39.99) and start recording audio sounds. with these devices you do not have to install anything else. When you plug the iTalk into your iPod’s headphone jack, your iPod will immediately go into voice-recording mode.

The other way (FREE!!) of getting your iPod to record is using a software called podzilla. Do note that not all iPods can be installed with podzilla as you will be required to boot into your iPod’s linux. With the podzilla, you can then use a normal microphone and record away.

Armed with a recording iPod, you can now record your lectures, voice memos or the chirp of a bird. If you are contemplating signing up for the American Idol contest, you can even sing into your iPod and listen to yourself after that. There will be no stopping you from practising, anywhere. You’ll never know, with a $40 addition to your iPod, you’re on your way to be the next American Idol winner!!
